What Is Gummy Smile Correction Treatment?

A “gummy smile” is a common term for when a large portion of the gums shows above the upper teeth when a person smiles. This can be caused by a variety of factors, including hyperactive upper lip muscles that pull the lip up too high.

The treatment involves small, precise injection of botulinum toxin into muscles either side of the nose which are responsible for lifting the upper lip. By relaxing these muscles, the treatment temporarily weakens their pull. This allows the upper lip to rest lower on the gums when you smile, creating a more balanced and aesthetically pleasing look.

Frequently Asked Questions

To promote healing and reduce risks of complications; avoid the following for at least 24 hours before your procedure.

  • Avoid smoking and alcohol for at least 24 hours before
  • Avoid aspirin or ibuprofen or herbal treatments as may increase bruising
  • Arrive with a clean face, free from makeup or skincare products
  • Avoid hair removal on treatment areas
  • Avoid using strong skincare products (topical retinoid, steroid and glycolic acid) for at least 1 week before your treatment

Discomfort is usually minimal. A very fine needle is used for the injections, and we use a topical numbing cream to ensure you are comfortable.

The procedure itself only takes about 15 minutes, but the entire consultation can last up to 45 minutes. During this time, we will discuss all your options and create a customized plan just for you.

The initial effect may start anywhere between 2 and 7 days. Allow up to 2 weeks for the maximum effect of the injections.

The effects are temporary, typically lasting between 3 to 4 months. To maintain the results, follow-up treatments are recommended.

Common side effects are mild and short-lived. These may include slight redness, swelling, small bumps at the injection sites and bruising. In rare cases, if the product migrates to nearby muscles, it can cause a temporary asymmetry in your smile, or make it difficult to drink from a straw, but the use of precise and small doses utilised will minimise this risk.
A precise and conservative approach will be used to preserve your natural expression and ability to talk. The goal is to subtly reduce the muscle’s strength, not to “freeze” it completely.

To reduce swelling, bruising and for optimal results, avoid the following for the first 24 hours after treatment:

  • Makeup to treated area(s),
  • UV exposure, extreme temperatures (like saunas and hot showers),
  • Strenuous activity or exercise, swimming,
  • Alcohol and smoking
  • Touching/rubbing the treated area (including pressure from clothing/accessories).
  • Avoid facial treatments/ massages for 2 weeks

You will receive detailed aftercare advice and a leaflet following your treatment. If you have any questions, contact the clinic for further guidance.
